An advertisement in the local parish newsletter brought unexpected results for a Worcestershire Bed & Breakfast owner.
Aware that her 200 year old home was steeped in history the owner did not expect this history to come alive in the form of a visitation from three generations of a local farming family shortly after breakfast one sunny spring morning.
In a world of her own, quietly washing up at the kitchen sink, relieved that satisfied guests had just driven down the drive, and looking forward to putting her feet up to read the papers…. when there was a knock on the back door…. No new guests had booked in, friends usually just walked in, so who could it be?
There was large car full of people in the drive and a young boy with an older man, she presumed to be his father, standing looking rather sheepish at the door. The little boy blurted out that his granny was in the car and they would really like to come into look at the house because she had lived here when she was a girl just after the war. What self-respecting landlady could refuse such a request?
So in they all marched and what a delight it was to become acquainted with the history of the house. Mrs. P. had been the only girl in a family of seven and spoke fondly of her time at Colliers Hill. Her brothers had worked on the farm whilst her mother and herself had cooked and cleaned.
A chore she didn’t enjoy was the polishing of the wood floors, which are now thankfully tiled or carpeted. After a very interesting morning of reminiscing I waved the family off expecting never to see them again.
However, a couple of days later I received a thank you card containing some old photos of the house and a request from Mr. And Mrs. P. and her family to celebrate their Ruby Wedding at Colliers Hill. I was delighted and honoured to organise such an event, the highlight being the celebration meal on the Saturday evening. A feast to remember when old and young alike shared their memories over a several glass of wine, bringing the history of the house alive for future generations to appreciate.
